HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
I can’t believe it’s 2016. This is the year I graduate college! <- That is crazy.
Anyway, I hope you had a great New Year’s Eve and holiday weekend!
I’m coming at you today with a recap of my year so far. 😉
Hey hey what up on this Wednesday?
I guess someone’s a little (too) excited to be back on the blog today (and to have an app that frames pictures)…
I did stop by for a quick ‘hey!’ on Monday, but today it’s back to your regularly scheduled programming with another WIAW link-up hosted by Jenn!
As I briefly mentioned at the end of my Friday Favorites post (and made pretty obvious in Monday’s Instagram), I did end up going to Cape Cod, MA for a quick trip. A couple friends of mine have cottages there, so since I had work off and schedules aligned, I packed my bags Saturday night and headed up there with a high school friend on Sunday afternoon!
We arrived around 5:45 and went straight to one of my college roommates/ best friends’ beautiful condo. It was cool and drizzling, but I did not care one bit. I hadn’t seen her in over 2 months and I was beyond excited to reunite!
A couple of my high school friends met my roommate when they visited me at school, and since this friend was one that visited, it wasn’t awkward (not that it would’ve been even if they hadn’t met) when we drove into downtown Chatham and had a nice long catch-up sesh over a delicious dinner.
Originally we had planned to go to The Chatham Squire, but there was a 45 minute wait (must mean it’s good!) and my roommate had to be on the road by 8:00 to get back for work on Monday morning. We walked around a bit and quickly decided on The Captain’s Table, and we were soon quite glad we did!
I ordered the salad plate with salmon, which was a tossed salad topped with a salmon filet and drizzled in raspberry vinaigrette (<- my favorite). It was simple but absolutely perfect. Plus a fluffy roll dipped in the dressing (I told you it’s my favorite!) rounded out the meal.
After chatting away for almost 2 hours, we (sadly) dropped my roommate off at her condo so she could head home. Even though it was way too short, I’m sooo happy I got to see her! 🙂
We then headed to my high school friend’s adorable cottage and got settled before leaving again to get ice-cream.
When I’m on vacation (and even when I’m not…), the question isn’t “do you want ice cream tonight?”, it’s “what flavor do you want tonight?”
We went to Emack & Bolio’s and I got the ‘Salted Caramel Chocolate Pretzel’. So sweet. So salty. So. freaking. good.
It was pretty nasty out so we decided to take it back to the cottage and eat it while watching the Kardashians because come on, is there any better way to spend a rainy summer night? Not in my book.
After devouring our frozen treats and commenting on the ridiculousness that is the Kardashians, we Face-Timed one of our friends who is interning in DC. It was awesome to ‘see’ him and he (as always) had as laughing so hard my abs were sore (which is a good thing since I didn’t workout at all Monday or Tuesday). I know I say this a lot, but I am seriously so blessed to have the hilarious/ fun/ caring/ incredible friends that I have!
We went to bed super late (and I didn’t end up falling asleep til 4 am…) so on Monday we slept in until 10:30. We had brought a ton of food from home so we could just eat dinner out (and ice-cream, that’s a given) in order to save money after the NYC trip last week. Breakfast was light and uneventful, and we left the cottage around 11 to head into town!
It wasn’t raining, but it wasn’t awesome weather, either. The skies were gray but luckily the temps were prime, so we decided to park the car in town and walk ~1.5 miles to Lighthouse Beach, window shopping and chatting as we went. When we got there we realized we wanted to stay so we walked back to the car, grabbed some beach towels and headed back.
I couldn’t help but snap some photos of the gorgeous hydrangeas and breathtaking ocean views!
The 4.5 mile walk in flip flops (+ lack of sleep) meant it was nap time as soon as we found a spot to spread our towels.
It was a bit chilly and windy, but the sun peaked out for about an hour or so. The soothing sound of waves crashing and little kids giggling made me so relaxed that I almost fell completely asleep (but not quite). I had my eyes open for a total of about 30 minutes to eat a pb + banana pita, white nectarine, almonds, and a few other snacks that I honestly can’t even remember (that’s how boring they were).
At about 4:30 we decided to make the trek back to the car so we could shower before heading to dinner!
Looking out and seeing this reminded me just how good life is.
After a nice warm shower, we headed out in search of an inexpensive place to eat. As we drove into town, the sign for Sweet Tomatoes caught our eye so we turned right in, ordered at the counter, and snagged a table outside! The sun was out now, and the weather couldn’t have been better for some casual outdoor dining.
Since it was just the two of us (other friends from home couldn’t get off work, which was a huge bummer, but we made the best of it!), we decided to split a salad and a sandwich. Again, another great dinner decision!
We literally did not leave a crumb on our plates.
The salad was fresh, and the raspberry vinaigrette (see, I did it again!) + goat cheese brought it to the next level. The sandwich was on the most incredible, thick focaccia and the roasted veggies + warm goat cheese melted in our mouths.
I know I can sometimes always sound a bit dramatic when I describe food, but I’m just being honest, and honestly it was that good.
Once we licked our plates clean, we sat and talked for another hour before going back in and grabbing a root beer. Don’t ask why I was suddenly craving this… It was weird but I just went with it.
Naturally, we then ventured over to Harwich to go to Schoolhouse Icecream and Yogurt for our nightly ice-cream fix. After mulling over the menu for about 10 minutes, I chose the ‘Harwich Mudpie’, which I believe was coffee ice-cream, brownie bites, almonds, and a little bit of heaven sprinkled in.
We brought them back home to eat later on after digesting our dinners, and so we had something to enjoy as we watched suffered through the painfully awkward ‘Bachelorette: The Men Tell All’.
By that, I mean we had it on in the background as I blogged/ read blogs/ enjoyed every spoonful/ cringed at the conversations the guys had. I haven’t been watching this season, and honestly after Monday night’s episode, I don’t feel like I’m missing out on much.
While I was happy when the episode was over, I was legitimately sad when I finished my ice-cream. I could’ve eaten another cup despite the fact that this ‘small’ was literally overflowing with chocolatey goodness.
Exhausted and in mild food-comas, we happily went to our rooms around midnight, and I was asleep by 1:00.
Tuesday was a sunny day (yay!), so I woke up at 8:45 ready to beach it. Again, we ate some lame breakfast, and then grabbed Dunkin iced coffees (toasted coconut for me!), and were basking in the glorious sun by 10:20.
We laid out, chatted, people-watched, and relaxed for a solid 5 hours before we decided to call it a day so we could hit the road and be back home before dark.
In case you’re wondering (which I’m sure you aren’t) – Yes, I did apply (and reapply) sunscreen, but yes, I did still get burnt in the places that hadn’t seen the light of day all summer. My stomach, upper thighs, and random patches on my back are the color of a tomato. Ouch.
Anyway, after a quick cleanup, we were saying goodbye to the cottage and to another awesome little getaway by 4:15.
The ride home takes about 3.5 to 4 hours, so we made a pit-stop at Dunkin again, and this time I tried the blueberry coffee. I always thought it sounded pretty gross, but I went for it and was pleasantly surprised!
As we sipped away, we had the age-old Starbucks vs Dunkin debate and concluded that DD’s coffee is the way to go.
This is because 1) it’s cheaper, 2) it comes in way more flavors, and 3) it doesn’t taste like syrup. I don’t know about you, but whenever I’ve gotten a flavored iced coffee from Starbs, all I taste is syrup. Could just be a bad barista, but I still prefer the price and variety of DD’s. Starbucks is good for other things though!
I digress…
I hadn’t eaten lunch (WHAT?! I never forget to eat a meal!), so as we drove I ate another pb banana pita, almonds, and various other treats I had stuffed in my bag.
I got home at 8:00 ready for a real meal, and luckily my wonderful mother had saved me some leftovers. I also had a bowl of cinnamon chex, yogurt and fruit, and a few little granola bars throughout the night because I was suddenly starving. I guess all that sun really drained my energy!
It was an awesome quick escape to the Cape, filled with fun times with friends, fabulous food, and lots of R&R!
Also, while I was there, I thought a lot about this little blog of mine. You may have noticed that my Instagram and Twitter handles are now @fuelingfab… As I said in my short post on Monday night this may be the name of my blog once I become self hosted…or it may not.
As I commented on my Instagram photo ^, I originally titled my blog ‘Fueling a Life’ for these reasons (also explained a bit more here).
As much as I love and am always going to keep the purpose of my blog and the meaning behind the current name, I love the word ‘fabulous‘ because I think it can describe so much – from life in general to fashion to workouts to food, which is what my blog is all about! Although I may discuss some serious topics, my blog is generally meant to be a lighthearted, slightly witty read to brighten peoples’ day, so I like how ‘fabulous’ is a fun word (that I use quite often) and is shortened to ‘fab‘, which is just a little more spunky (if a word can be spunky?). Plus, I do love a good alliteration…
I guess it all boils down to what name has more of a ring to it/ makes sense/ represents my blog/ lets the reader know exactly what my site is all about right from the get-go.
As you can see, it’s a really tough decision for me, so any and all input would be greatly appreciated! And don’t worry, you won’t hurt my feelings either way 🙂
Thanks for sticking around through my long posts and listening to allll my thoughts! I hope you have a great Wednesday and a fabulous rest of the week 😉

‘Liebster’ means “dearest” in German. This award is “a way for up-and-coming bloggers to demonstrate each others’ appreciation for what we do”.
The Rules:
Pretty cool, no?
So here I go with the questions that Kim asked!
~~~~~~~~~~
My answers to Kim’s questions:
1. Why did you start blogging?
I started blogging because I was obsessed with the ‘blog world’ and read blogs every single day. I knew that ‘someday’ I would start my own, but I just never knew when that ‘someday’ would be. One day I woke up and decided ‘today was the day’. I sat down that night and created this ol’ thang. I’ve been in love since day one.
2. What has surprised you most about being a blogger?
It takes a lot of hard work for the idea in your head to come to fruition. And even longer to get followers. Something else that surprised me was how quickly you fall in love with it.
3. If you were going to blog about anything other than what you actually blog about, what would it be and why?
Probably ‘celeb gossip’ and more about ‘beauty’ (tips, products, trends, etc). I’m pretty obsessed with this stuff, just not as much as fitness, fashion, and food.
4. List 2-3 blogs that inspire you the most, and why.
It’s hard for me to just choose a few, but I would have to say Peanut Butter Fingers, The Fitnessista, and Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life. Their blogs were the first ones I found and started following regularly, and I absolutely love their styles of blogging, and more importantly their outlooks on health, fitness, food, and life in general.
5. What are your fav songs on your workout playlist right now?
Atlas by Coldplay, Little Bit of Everything by Keith Urban, Who You Love by John Mayer, Roar by Katy Perry, Royals by Lorde, Pretty Brown Eyes by Cody Simpson, Wake Me Up by Avicii, the list goes on and on…
6. Have you made any real life friendships through blogging?
I haven’t met any blogging buds in person yet, but I have definitely felt welcomed into the community and am looking forward to forming more relationships through it!
7. If you could blog full time, would you?
Hmmm. Maybe if I was a stay at home mom! I would love to be able to do that one day. I’m sure I would love to blab all about my future kids 🙂
8. Do you have a guilty pleasure food (that you feel zero guilt eating of course )?
Ice cream (that includes froyo). Period.
9. What is your favorite way to workout? Least favorite?
I love running obviously, but I also love spinning workouts, cardio machines, HIIT and circuit workouts, barre, and more! I love basically any workout that’s fast paced and on the more ‘intense’ side. Yoga is nice for relaxation, but probably my least favorite ‘workout’.
10. What about your blog are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of the fact that it’s me. I write exactly what comes to mind, and don’t edit it to fit a mold or to meet others’ expectations. I write in a way that is honest to who I am. My blog represents me and what I value most in life. I’m very proud that others actually seem to enjoy what I have to say and can relate to the things I write about. It makes me so happy to connect to other people while remaining 100% true to myself.
Thanks again to Kim for nominating me!
Looking forward to seeing what my nominees have to say!!
As I keep saying, I’ve been super busy lately but through all the work and craziness, I’ve had one thing on my mind – this blog!
I’ve been attempting to take lots of (discreet) pictures of my meals lately, because 1) they’ve been delish and 2) I want to share them with you!
So, here are some of the things I’ve been nommin’ lately.
~~~~~~~~~~
On Monday night, my mom and I made Julie‘s Healthy Italian Meatloaf. We had never made this recipe before, but we love her BBQ Meatloaf, so we figured this one would be just as tasty!
Once again, another one of Julie’s recipes did not disappoint!
*Side note: The rolls that are basically always pictured on my plate are Multi-Grain Pepperidge Farm Stone Baked Artisan Dinner Rolls.
(source)
I know “multigrain” is not always the best choice for bread products, and I generally choose whole grain/wheat, but these are so good I just can’t resist. I probably have one for dinner about three times a week! Basically all my other grains are whole, which is what I recommend.
~~~~~~~~~~
While watching The Bachelorette on Monday night, I sampled a few scoops of the Cookies N Cream SO Delicious Coconut Milk Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert that my friend had in her freezer.
I wasn’t expecting it to taste so coconut-y, but I was pleasantly surprised! It certainly doesn’t taste like normal dairy ice cream, but it’s light and refreshing! I would definitely have it again!
~~~~~~~~~~
Last night, the boy and I went to California Pizza Kitchen! We love all their food, especially their pizza and salads! I especially love the Waldorf Chicken salad, which is “A right-coast classic with a left-coast makeover. Grapes, green apples, candied walnuts, crisp celery, field greens and Gorgonzola tossed with housemade Dijon balsamic vinaigrette”.
I also am obsessed with this bad boy.
That would be the California Veggie, “Decked out with fresh vegetables! Baby broccoli, eggplant, corn, red onions, mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes, Mozzarella and tomato sauce”. I always get it on the honey-wheat with whole grain crust, and I finish it all by myself every single time. I’m telling you, I can really put it away ;).
After digesting for a few hours, my stomach began to growl. Around 10:00, I scoped out his freezer and found this little guy.
(source)
Oh my gosh. The perfect size, the perfect flavor, the perfect nighttime treat. LOVE it.
~~~~~~~~~~
Lately for breakfast I’ve been whipping up microwave mug eggs with salsa, and a smoothie. I love the warm, savory eggs paired with the cold, sweet smoothie! The perfect combo on a summer morning.
They may not be the most pleasing to the eye, but they sure do please my grumbling belly!
~~~~~~~~~~
I know I keep saying it, but I really want to start posting some recipes and workouts (I’ve done a lot of good ones lately!!). I also realize I’ve been slacking in the fashion posts department :(, mostly because I’ve been lazy with my outfits and just wearing running shorts and tanks. Once my internship/work schedule becomes more regular, I’m hoping I can find the time to make this blog everything I want it to be… and more!
~~~~~~~~~~
I just ate dinner (an awesome chili recipe I will share probably in my next post), and now I’m off to walk my neighbor’s golden retrievers and then head to my friend’s house to hang out!
Hope your week is going well! It’s almost the weekend!! 🙂
So, lately I’ve been cookin’ up a storm over here! During the summer, I absolutely love to help my mom make dinner for the family. I email her recipes I find and we make them together, or she teaches me some of her ‘classics’. I try to be home for dinner just about every week night during summer vacay so I can help her cook and have some fam time. Friday and Saturday are takeout/ out to dinner nights at our house, so that’s when I tend to go out to eat with my friends (although I do eat out with the fam a lot too).
I love experimenting and making things like turkey burgers with avocado or mango salsa, salmon with all sorts of different toppings, different types of chilies and meat loafs, quesadillas, homemade pizzas, and yummy side dishes. It’s so fun when my family tries what we make and guesses what the ‘secret ingredient’ is and gives us feedback. Cooking is definitely a hobby of mine and something I look forward to doing more of in the future.
Tonight I made flatbreads and quesadillas with Flatout Healthy Grain Flatbreads, salsa, mozzarella cheese, grilled chicken, black beans, all sorts of veggies, and The Laughing Cow Light Mozzarella, Sun-Dried Tomato & Basil.
Last night, my mom and I made stuffed peppers using one of her old recipes. I don’t know the exact ingredients/measurements but I know we used lean ground beef, tomato sauce, onion, tomato, half a cup of brown rice, a little mozzarella cheese and some spices. We ate them with fresh whole grain rolls and Olivio spread. They were scrumptious and super pretty, but I forgot to take a photo until after I started eating mine. Whoopsies.
~~~~~~~~~~
Some Thoughts to Share
I really want to start posting recipes for breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner, and desserts, as well as more workouts and outfits of the day! As soon as I’m all settled into my internship/ work schedule, I’m hoping I can find the time to fix up this blog and make it all I want it to be.
I hate how unprofessional it looks with no organized categories, low quality photos, and no rhyme or reason to anything. I’m obsessed with the whole blog world and I want so badly to be a part of it, so it frustrates me that mine is looking so crappy when I know exactly the direction I want to take it. I just don’t have the time, experience, or means to really get there right now. (I am not making excuses at all here – more just justifying to myself why it’s okay this isn’t ‘perfect’).
That is NOT at all to say that I’m not proud of what I’ve done so far because, in all actuality, just the fact that I even have a blog is surreal to me.
~~~~~~~~~~
So anyway, now that my little confessional rant is over, I just want to share a few things I’ve been up to in the past couple days.
Yesterday, the boy was off from work so he and I got some Subway sandwiches (um hello, Turkey & Avocado on 9 Grain Wheat, where have you been all my life?) and had a little picnic outside in a local park and then swung on swings at a playground. It was fun to run around in the bright summer sun and just be young. Sometimes us young adults are so focused on our futures that we forget that we can still let our inner child out every now and again. Carefree days like that remind me how the little things – a sunny day, a completely free afternoon and laughter – are really what life is all about.
Speaking of the little things, we also enjoyed soft serve vanilla ice cream with rainbow sprinkles – a summertime classic. So simple. So, so good. (I enjoyed mine so much that I realized I wanted to take a picture of it’s perfection the second I finished. Typical.)
On that tasty note, I’m out!
Hope your week is going well! Catch y’all latahhh!
Well, I went to bed with one thing on my mind last night.
This blog.
Well, actually just the title of this blog. There was something about its former name that just wasn’t quite doing it for me. “Sweat, Sweets, and Shopping” just doesn’t roll off the tongue.
My aha moment was reached when the title “Fueling Happy” came to mind. I immediately got out of bed and wrote it down on a little scrap of paper (that’s now crumpled in the trash). I guess someone else thought it was just as awesome as I did, because this morning when I went to change the title, it was already taken. Dang it. But hey, looks like now I have another blog to follow!
I loved the idea of a little play on words, using the word “fuel” in place of “feel”, while still utilizing the meaning of the word. To me, the fuel for a healthy life is not just the nutrients you place in your body (though there will be a lot of that discussed), it’s really anything that brings you happiness. Whether it be sweating it out in a morning workout, slurping down a green protein smoothie, finally mastering that perfect sock bun, indulging in a giant sundae with your best friends, jazzing up that plain white tee with a new statement necklace, blasting country music with the windows down- whatever it is that makes you feel good. You fuel a life with whatever makes you feel alive.
So, it may not have been my first choice, and it may not have the perfect ring to it that I was searching for.
But it’ll do!
For now, anyway.
